Street Style Sketches: Hawaii

streetstylehawaii

Aloha fashionistas and fashionistos!

I can hardly believe it, but I’m blogging today from Honolulu, Hawaii!! I’m here on family vacation until Friday. It’s so beautiful (despite the rainy weather that comes and goes)! I adore the fact that the mountains, beach, and metropolitan area are all here together. I'm used to all of them being completely different places far from each other. Needless to say, there's quite a laidback mixed with hustle and bustle feel about the city.

I wanted to share a street style look from a whale watching cruise adventure I took with my family. I’ve seen lots of laid back street looks and I loved this weather appropriate yet Hawaiian inspired look.

I’ve done a bit of shopping here and there, but I plan to check out the miles of fabulous stores around Waikiki beach. Check back for more street style sketches and/or my Hawaiian shop finds!

A hui hou (See you later)!

A Wee Bit o Street Style For Ya

Ello, loves! I attended a friend's etching show/party last Thursday and spotted this stylista! What first caught my eye was her adorable little bag (you know I'm a sucker for tiny purses!). Click for a larger view. I love her overall look. It's perfect for a low key event without being too casual. Don't you think?

Hope everyone's having a lovely November!
Until next post,

c) an upcoming project related to Fashion Week:
The project: I'm working on creating a line up (or 2) of fashion sketches for a scholarship gala in Atlanta due in March. The snazzy peeps of Atlanta come see the show, buy art, and the money goes to SCAD scholarships.
The Fashion Week part: I'll be checking daily for the reviews of the fabulousness seen in the tents and pick some looks from 1 or 2 of my favorite Fall collections to illustrate for the project! Updates? You'll get 'em!

Rainy Day Not So Blues

A little street style inspiration from yesterday. The weather made for quite a grey day, but it was nice to see someone brighten things up with lots of color!

Three of a Kind

These ladies are proof that a trip to the store is no less stylish an occasion than any other! How fun is their cohesive color scheme of black and white and each of the quirky and fun additions? Check out the necklace on the chicette on the left, the shoes on the girl in the center, and the stripe-on-stripe that's going on at the end!
A great accessory doesn't have to be limited to a great bag or shoe. Super stylish friends are better than a go-to pair of black pumps or the latest it bag!

On a similar note: Last night, some of my pals and I unintentionally dressed in black and blue! The absurd facial expressions were somewhat intentional!

'til next post!

dressing the part

I was in and out of meetings and work today. One meeting was held to introduce all fashion students at SCAD to the new dean of what is now the School of Fashion (no longer a mere department of the school of design). Dean Fink spoke about the things we should be doing as fashion students and how the program is there to help. One thing he touched on was dress code. (few students in the department know that we actually have a written code!). No tshirt, jean, flip-flop ensembles--dress like you're a fashion student! Experiment! And, yes, we all have our bad days, but put forth the effort people!
Blake, here, has it right!
(sorry for all the !s. :/)

The dean wants us to make Savannah one of the best dressed cities.
I'm down with that.
Fellow fashionizers: I'll meet you on Broughton!
Have a fantastic and fashion-filled weekend!

SPF (Summer Party Fashion) 100

Photos from the poolside Summer Soiree at the Ballantyne Hotel in Charlotte. There was a small fashion show with swimwear from local designers and Tiffany and Co. jewelry. I snapped a few of the most stylishly dressed fashionistas.

Soiree anyone? Write on!

Street Style pictures from a fancy little soiree put on by some of the Professional Writing majors at SCAD (my roommates a Professional Writing major hence my attendance).

The hostess. She was totally rocking the Audrey Hepburn moment.

A few of my pals! Love the "ray-bans!"

The pattern on her dress was divine.

You can't see the black asymmetrical dress in the back with her pink accessories, but take my word for it, it was cute!

Look! It's me! I managed to include a personal style picture into a post! Yay!

Ok, I so wish I had taken a better photo. Her dress was my favorite! She had these adorable ribbons of childhood (thank you History of Fashion!) in the back.
The weekend had been pretty fab thus far. I got to spend 5 hours Friday watching senior fashion majors get their 6 look final collection critiqued. There's was some pretty amazing stuff that I wish I could share. Fingers crossed I'll get to see the final looks chosen at the fashion show May 16th. Updates until then!
Thanks for reading!

Sidewalk Arts Festival 09

Today I went to the SCAD Sidewalk Arts Festival. Squares were filled with a wide range of artwork done by current students, prospective students, and alumni. My roommates, a friend, and I had two squares. No pictures yet, but I'll be posting them soon!
Below, I snapped a few photos of my favorite squares and outfits. Her friend made her hat and had the square beside ours. She made huge, delicious looking cupcake!

There were some fabulous, messy looks! My gang and I had fun coloring ourselves with the chalk!

My current collection is ethnic inspired, so this fun colorful print caught my eye.

Love the patterns and the detail on the back of the black top!

Now, for the squares:

Badgley Mischka and 20s street style

For SCADstyle week, we had the honor of having designers Marc Badgley and James Mischka hold a Q&A tonight. The discussion, questions, and advice were great. They spoke about their label's style, tips on how to make it in the fast-paced fashion business, how they started out, and there was a lot of talk about the current economic situation. According to them, the $10,000 dresses they make and couture industry will survive! Apparently, it can never die.
Oddly related, the girl that sat in front of me caught my attention for a street style post. Turbans have been on my mind since I designed a retro swimwear collection that included a few of the cute wrap caps. Her turban is actually a 20s cap that she so cleverly wore backwards. Paired with the striped top, tassel necklace, and wide leg pant I read the perfect 20s vibe. So, some people can still afford a $10,000 gown as opposed to, say, the normal three in today's fickle economy. I say, stylish folks like this girl have the answer if its daily wear and a smaller budget were talking about. Vintage is always the answer! At least for me!
I'm still swamped with work, but I can't control my urge to post! Until next time loves!

Weather, you like it or not. I'll wear what I want!

Today's post involves a street style photo from a while back. It sorta got lost in my files. I was a bit timid at posting it today--at first. I asked myself why and discovered my reasoning behind it was the same for how I post street style on most days. The weather seems to be at the root of my decisions. For this image, I thought the look was too "fall" for the beautiful spring-like day we're having in Savannah today.

After a little contemplation, I thought of a book I read in high school about French women's style. Each glossy picture of an effortlessly, well-dressed woman had a facing page that described how they go about achieving such fabulous looks. One I remember most: They dress how they want with no regard for the weather.

So, in the same spirit, I say wear what you want and be inspired by more than just the weather. I, too, feel the necessity to apply this and a few other French style concepts to my daily outfit decision making.

The way I see it: The weatherman's job involves meteorology and storm tracking and such. He's hardly qualified to be your personal stylist too!

I love loose silhouettes like this with just a few layers to make it look easy going yet put together. It's great how her hair and the cup sleeve coordinate with her dress!

A little update on my dress:

the inspiration...

and a glimpse of the design.

The Brightest Crayon Outside of the Box

Today's all about les couleurs! Oui! I wanted to look extra cheery today, so I went with a super saturated ensemble.
Let's do the outfit breakdown! Top: Worn backwards, thrifted; Skirt: thrifted; Belt: idk; Shoes: Isaac Mizrahi for Target.
To complement: A Hester Spring 09 look. Looove!

And a perfectly purple street style pic.

Twice as Nice

Today's post is a quick one. I've got tons to do! I thought a little "double feature" for today would be nice. A street style find and my ensemble for today.
I would so wear this girls outfit! I'm getting a laidback/urban/nature feel from this look. Love!

I can't stop buying high waisted skirts! They're just so darn fabulous! I particularly love the double darts and the pockets on this one.

Top: ?
Skirt: Thrifted
Belt: Thrifted
Tights: TJ Maxx...I think
Shoes: MIA, but from shoe store, somewhere
*I really need to remember where I buy this stuff!

Wild about Frills

This is one fab fashionista I couldn't pass up. It' s great to see layers done creatively yet so beautifully cohesive! She looks perfectly put together, but doesn't over do it (she's still right at home strolling Broughton St.) Her gold shoes and that cute red belt are divine finishing touches!

1.31.2009

Yellow Pants

I liked the yellow pant with the red plaid. Everything works but the backpack and the cap, yet I can relate to having to create a mobile look. Even when something doesn't really "go," you just gotta wear it. The items together (the cap, bright pant, and jacket) create an urban look. Maybe what he was going for?

Rustic Rose

Yesterday and today's street style pictures prove that T-shirt dresses are a Savannah trend. Delicate details, a great color combination, and an overall simple silhouette create this fabulous look. The boots and single bangle give a nice rustic element to the girlish ensemble. This was a great day to take advantage of a nice easy-going, lightweight outfit like this one.
