Lavender is the New Pink (Lemonade)

When life gives you weather this hot, go to the store and make lavender lemonade! I'm absolutely in love with lavender (herb & color), so when I happened upon a recipe for lavender lemonade, I knew that the scorching weather wasn't my only reason to make a pitcher. It turned out as sweet and delicious as I'd hoped. Try it yourself!

Happy New Year...What? (And other confessions of the long lost creator of this blog)

Um, okay. It's been longer than awhile. It's been longer than quite awhile. It's been nearly 7 months since my last confession--I mean, post, but I do have a confession: I have been seeing other blogs. There. It's out! I now have 4 blogs along with the countless other social networking aka time consuming monsters of the inter-webs along with the thing that I surprisingly call my life. But I decided that I can not abandon my first born! For any followers still out there: I'm officially baaaaaaaack! Tell your mom. Tell your friends. Tell that weird neighbor of your's 2 houses down. I'll say it now to you and to myself: I won't be posting frequently*; but if you ever miss me, you can find me here, here, here and here (and probably other heres I didn't even know about). Occasionally you'll catch a glimpse of me out on the streets of Savannah.

Anywho! To kick things off, I have decided to add a new, erm, segment(?) to my blog. Introducing "What I Didn't Wear Today." This is not to be confused with "What I Wore Today" or any posts on a nudist's blog.

The concept: I will post illustrated interpretations of things I wish I was wearing but can not because they a) do not exist to my knowledge b) do not fit in a poor college girl's budget c) do not exist in my size (again, to my knowledge) or d) seem to be completely and/or morally

unattainable (i.e. a $3 vintage skirt that someone walking next to me is wearing)

Street Style Sketches: Hawaii

Aloha fashionistas and fashionistos!

I can hardly believe it, but I’m blogging today from Honolulu, Hawaii!! I’m here on family vacation until Friday. It’s so beautiful (despite the rainy weather that comes and goes)! I adore the fact that the mountains, beach, and metropolitan area are all here together. I'm used to all of them being completely different places far from each other. Needless to say, there's quite a laidback mixed with hustle and bustle feel about the city.

I wanted to share a street style look from a whale watching cruise adventure I took with my family. I’ve seen lots of laid back street looks and I loved this weather appropriate yet Hawaiian inspired look.

I’ve done a bit of shopping here and there, but I plan to check out the miles of fabulous stores around Waikiki beach. Check back for more street style sketches and/or my Hawaiian shop finds!

Brrrr! I hope everyone's keep warm during this chilly weeks! I just wanted to post an update of my Stella McCartney project I was working on for the Savannah scholarship gala coming up next year. Similar to what I did for the Atlanta gala (see post here), I did a line up of looks from a collection I'm currently ga-ga over. This time it's Stella McCartney's Resort 2011 collection. I find that a lot of times resort collections are those little lost gems of fashion, smaller and usually a more concise design statement.

One thing SCAD seems to get right are the visitors they book (may it be with late notice, odd timing, or cramped spaces). After the elation of Scott Shuman's (The Sartorialist) and Garance Dore's visit, this quarter's second set of guests, Kim Hastreiter and Mickey Boardman of Paper magazine, were a cherry on top. For those unfamiliar with the magazine visit www.papermag.com, or better yet run out and snag a copy NOW!

Hastreiter described the beginnings of the publication in 1984 when it was just her and partner David Hershkovits in an apartment with very little money. The first issues looked nothing like the magazine today. It started out as a large, folded, black and white poster filled with content covering art, fashion and the buzzing New York culture. Articles and photos were made by artists, not typical journalists. It was a publication for the creatives by the creatives.
Why the name Paper? Kim told the intimate crowd that she was inspired by the simplicity and effectiveness of the brand Agnes B. She wanted a name that didn't define the magazine because it wasn't just an art magazine or a fashion magazine or a pop culture magazine: it was a convergence of all that inspired Kim and David.

Much of the talk consisted of Kim and Mickey's distaste of the fashion industry and I couldn't agree with their comments more. "Just because you're cute, connected, and famous does not mean you design good stuff," Kim said. "I see a lot of issues with the fashion establishment. Often they [fashion editors, buyers, etc.] don't look at the clothes; it's about who can sell more perfume." Mickey discussed his days at Parsons when they seemed to have an obsession with producing Michael Kors clones. His style was eccentric (evident from his blingy and bold chain necklace with matching leopard print jacket and sneakers. His Jackie O meets Hip Hop collection ("Jackie Ho") received "crickets." "In my spare time I'd try something they'd like," he said. "I'd put the vest over the jacket and they'd go crazy!" His best advice came from his story on how he got from Illinois with a Spanish degree to New York working in fashion: "Find someone genius [speaking of Kim] and stick to them like glue." Simple enough, eh? Take a look at the genius he speaks of and you'll instantly see why she's not your typical Anna Wintour or Amy Astley:

The talk was fascinating: there were shared tales of Kim's first dinner with the Toledos, receiving a letter from Geoffrey Beene himself and her large collection of fake designer fakes (or "cultural icons" she told us). It was so great to hear about how someone is truly making a unique mark in a world of waxy, high heeled figures and receiving praise from the typical fashion media for what she does. "It doesn't matter what you're doing," she told us. "Just so it really well and do it honestly."

So excited about my new Dolce Vita for Target derby shoes! I've been searching for an affordable oxford style shoe in my size for quite awhile. I may be insane for wearing such a pointed toe with a big foot like mine, but I can't get enough of shoes with a sharp tip. Let's hope for many great outfits this fall with these babies!

"What I'm seeing and the romantic way I see it"

Today was a busy, fabulousness filled day! It started off with my 2nd Savannah celebrity encounter. Those that follow him may already know, but The Sartorialist (Scott Schuman) paid a visit to Savannah!!! I was lucky enough to attend a Q&A at the fashion building where he discussed his approach to taking photos, how he got to where he is, and inspiration (I was also lucky enough to have him sign my copy of his photo book!

The lovely, lovely bonus of his visit was Garance Dore, blogger/illustrator/photographer/all around amazing fille francaise! I was able to ask her about how she started in with fashion illustration. She answered with an inspiring tale of someone who had the door slammed in her face and told that she'll never make it. She persevered, of course, and has even worked for prestigious fashion companies such as Dior! She stressed the importance her blog had in where she is now. It allowed her to show her work and receive comments, suggestions, and praise without the pressure to please an art director. Scott ended the session by following up Garance's answer. He spoke of how having a of point of view in any creative profession was essential. Speaking of his own style, he pointed out that his photos aren't about what brands or trends the subject's wearing and he doesn't compare himself to other street style blogs. He said it's most about "what [he's] seeing and the romantic way [he] sees it."

My day kept moving in a positive direction after attending Fall Fest with the executive officers of our Fashion Illustration Club. We received a great response from students and I hope it proves for a great quarter for the club!

Just a quick post to say 'ello lovelies! School's back in session and this time 'round is senior year! I'll have lots to do (and tons to share!). Hope every one's last days of summer are wrapping up nicely. I personally CANNOT wait until fall weather finally makes its way down to Savannah. We could sure use a break from the heat!

painting on alternative surfaces always entices and frightens me. summer is my favorite time to experiment with such endeavors. after finding inspiration from a fellow illustration student and artist Audrey Kawasaki, i've decided to take a stab at it myself. i'm currently working on a large panel of oak with graphite and acrylic (trying out oils is still on my list!) for my bedroom. photos to come soon! until then check out more of Kawasaki's work at the link above!

Sun, skin, music, accessories. Let me break it down for you:

1. Black Weaved Vinyl bag : Hands free is the way to be. Scored this baby at a flea market.

2. Red Sunnies via Civvies in Savannah,GA : Gotta keep the sun outta your eyes. These are similar to a pair I had last year with a little added metal.

3. YSL Parisienne Eau de Parfum : Feel sophisticated with one spritz. It's sweet and flowery without overdoing it & light enough for summer.

4. Smith's Rosebud Salve: Low key lipcare--I gave up on lip gloss in high school. This stuff gives just enough shine for me thanks.

5. Almay intense i-color: Any purple or dark colored eyeliner, really. I usually reserve this for evenings. Waterproof it up for nights at the beach.

6. deLiA*s Mint nail lacquer: Raved about previously. Still addicted to this color and I plan to wear it until the bottle or summer runs out.

7. CG translucent powder: I like to keep the shine on my lips; this tries to help out with that.

8. Aveeno Continuous Protection Sunblock Lotion SPF 55: I love a nice tan, but I also love not having skin cancer. This lotion + sunnies + a big floppy hat = heya, day at the beach!

9. Avon Gold Strength Fortifiant Top Coat: A gift from grams. Works like a dream! Nothing else makes my nail polish last longer. It also adds subtle gold specks for sparkle!

10. "Diamond" ring via Civvies: The most expensive diamond I can afford right now. I love the irony of it as well as the geometric design.

"Thin isn't in" 2010 mixed media

'Ello all! Hope every one's summer is splendid thus far! I'm nearing the end of my first week on break and I must say its been somewhat uneventful but nevertheless relaxing.

Above is the last illu I did for my Materials and Techniques II class. I found it "suiting" with the ominous swimsuit approaching. I'm not bashing thin girls, but I am applauding the burgeoning appreciation for thicker girls. All in all the message is to love your body for what it is. Even if you were one size in the past and another size now, the confidence is what matters most.

Well, I'm off to work on a possible accessory/beauty post for tomorrow and organizing my portfolio site (link to come!).

Words of the Wise

Before I delve into the ocean of homework awaiting me, I wanted to share information from the panel I attended this evening. The panel convo consisting of designer Chris Benz and his entourage (muse and business posse) was another event for SCAD Style.

For those unfa

miliar with Benz, he is the 2004 CFDA Emerging Design Award recipient, a Parsons alum, and an ex-J.Crew designer (dresses and special occasion). Now with his own successful label, he came to Savannah to give advise to a few of us wide-eyed fashion kids.

Most of the discussion covered the details of how he personally got to where he is. He met his business partner at Parsons where he started at the ripe young age of 16, interned at Marc Jacobs at 17 (thanks to a friend who recommended him), and the l

uck just kept going from there. I'm not saying that his career happened just out of luck. He's clearly talented (check out his latest collection), but sometimes it just seems so fantastical when you're the one sitting in the plastic chair in the audience.

The best part of the convo came when the designer's muse, actress Eva Amurri, gave her advice on how to make it in the fashion industry. "You need to be skinny...or gay...or both." Of course, that was followed by a "just kidding," but she sure hit the stereotypical nail on the head. She also shared the fact that she internet stalked Benz before meeting him, developed a crush on him, and then met the man. Yeah...

There was also plenty of talk about the business end of the label, an

d they didn't make it seem all cupcakes and butterflies. Benz and his gang told us that it's a lot of hard work and more of the work is in marketing yourself and your collections--not just designing. Instead of hearing the same horror stories about how horrible the fashion industry is, the designer added that the business is "still glamorous." The continuous slideshow of photoshoots, celebrities, and red carpet events in the back weren't evidence enough for me. ;)

Early Morning Victory

What's a better way to start off your day than with a little bit of sweet success? My success? Finally obtaining tickets to the highly anticipated SCAD fashion show this year! Since I started scouting out SCAD as the school I wanted to attend, I wanted to go to this show! And finally...I can!

The guest of honor this year will be Diane von Furstenberg. I must start now to find a dress to wear. Maybe a wrap dress in honor of DvF?

The show is also the day of my dear mother's birthday, so mommy dearest will be my date for the evening. Pictures and commentary will be a must!

I'm off later today to attend a panel on blogging that coincides with SCAD style. Let's hope it's a good discussion. After work, out with a few friends. Super excited about the day!

Above is a another practice sample done for my Materials and Techniques II class. This time 'round we're focusing on waterbased applications like ink, watercolor, and gouache--all of which are my favorite mediums! Since this is just a practice piece there was no story or concrete idea behind it, but I would say I was thinking about beauty, artificiality, and delicateness.

This week kicked off SCAD Style in Savannah and Atlanta. I attended one panel discussion

thus far and plan to attend more tomorrow and next week. Yesterday's lecture was about retail and design.

The panel consisted of 3 buyers. I felt more annoyed than inspired or informed. They complained about

how their job was the hardest thing in the world and how they wish the whole blogging fad would be over.

Apparently, you have to be a million year old editor that works for a snooty magazine for years to have

true "authority" on fashion. They said lots of bloggers have "passion" but that's just not the same as authority.

As much as I love fashion, I know that it doesn't take a brain scientist to do research on past people,

trends, show, etc. I know, it's getting a little out of hand with the young prodigy blogger buzz, but who's fault is

that? Editors? The explosion of the blogsphere goes hand in hand with the expansion of technology and

how fashion and knowledge is so much more accessible now! They further discussed things of this nature

Overall, I felt the panel was out of touch with the

kind of shoppers that make up the majority of the nation. Not all of us consciously make the decision to

not invest in 3 $10,000 dresses every season! Sometimes stores like H&M and Forever 21 are our designer pieces.

Anywho, if anything annoys or inspires me from any of the other events during SCAD Style, I'll be sure

to post my opinions after. :)

I actually put on an outfit I liked today. Here's a peek.

In the pic: Rodarte for Target tee, thrifted everything else, mint green color of the summer nail polish, and an in-progress assignment for class based on a color scheme from the Fletcher color system. I was loving the colors of all these elements together, so, voila!

Tonight's the 2nd Fashion Illustration Club meeting/sketch session! I'm supa' pysched! I'll post about it later with pictures!

Over spring break, I finished the set

of fashion illustrations for the scholarship gala as I mentioned in my last post. Well, without further ado, the finished product. I apologize for the horrible reproduction. I had to use the photo I took on my digital camera after running about town to 4 different places to have it scanned and no one being able to scan a 15"x 22" sheet...in color...in less than a few hours. Nevertheless, I had fun making these ladies, and I hope that a patron at the scholarship gala fancies them as well.

Since the debut of the Chanel Fall 09 collection, I've been jonesin' for some of the refreshingly beautiful nail polish the models wore in the show.

Well, I got pretty darn close to the shade with my recent find from deLiA*s. Their shade is called "Mint" and Chanel's is "Jade" (it has a bit

more blue). It's the closest I've been able to get my hands on for less than 5

bucks! If you ask me, it's the must have nail shade of the season!

In other news...I'm currently working on the project for the scholarship gala. I'm running close to the deadline, but I hope to have it finished and fabulous in time!

The collection I decided to go with wasn't one of the three I was debating over. Instead, I chose to illustrate 5 looks from Alexander Mcqueen's final collection. It's sort of my tribute to his genius and the beauty that he left behind. He believed in breaking the rules and creating pieces that were more than clothes or garments and that's, and I greatly admire that.

A little aside from my usual fashion oriented posts. I wanted to share a poster I made for a class of mine. The assignment was to make a modern propaganda poster (based on Russian propaganda posters from WWII) for a current social or political issue. I chose the issue of rape and sexual assault. It's something I wanted to bring awareness about to anyone that sees it, but my main audience was intended to be the victims of sexual abuse. I want to let them know that recovery is possible. They should know that their bodies belong to them and are not the property of others even after such a horrible experience.

one of those projects being a propaganda poster for a social cause. My cause? Human trafficking and sexual abuse. The image that inspired it (above) and a photo reference of my roommate (below).

New York Fashion Week is almost here! I feel for the designers rushing about to finish up their last details and all those trying to get this huge event ready! Thursday is the premiere day and as much as I would DIE to be there, I'll have to settle for runway photos on the internet.

Above are some of my favorites from the Shipley and Halmos Fall 2010 collection which has already debuted sans the Bryant Park tent frenzy. The collection is so minimal and so succinct. It's what I feel a lot of women want in their closet (at least this one does!). It just oozes with modernity and functionality. Simple and chic never looked so right!

thumbnails: the evolution

Change and evolution: it's all apart of life. A fact we all come to learn whether it be willingly or not. Lately, for me"change" keeps showing its precious little face.

The image of the "laundress" from above is just something from a month or so back I felt like sharing. I try and make a point to look back through old sketchbooks regularly to see how the things I draw have changed.

The image below is an example the very evolution I speak of. One of the biggest transitions I'm currently undergoing is the switch from fashion designer to, not necessarily fashion illustrator (yet), but illustrator. There are the obvious changes, like in my thumbnails. I consider them both thumbnails but they're quite different from one another. I've find myself still thinking about composition, but instead of on the body, on the page. The details still matter: not closures and seams but props and subtle symbolism. The smaller changes aren't as drastic or evident, I actually feel that a lot of what I've learned in my fashion courses translate into how I think creatively and interpret things, just in a different medium.

I'm still happy with my switch of majors and with registration coming up in a couple of weeks, it's about to get real official. As in, no looking back, I'll be pursuing a career as an illustrator when I graduate.

Amongst this and the other things in life that happen to evolve when you become a 20-something (eek), I continue to re-approach my outlook at the world. Never being one for the same ol same ol (a reason the fashion industry appeals to me), I like to create little mantras to put things in my mangled mind into perspective. The most recent applies to my art and equally to my life:

Make it beautiful; make it mean something.

I received a few "textbooks" in the mail yesterday. I say "textbooks" because they're not textbooks in the traditional sense. My professor recommended we purchase a few illustration annuals or books for reference. They show the current, amazing illustrators who are in the market right now.

I wanted to share a few images from Illusive 3. Beautiful book, inside and out. I recommend even if you're not an illustrator. It would make a great coffee table book with its lovely cover and engaging imagery inside.

New illustration. I started this last year, but just now got the inspiration to finish. I wanted to go bold to illustrate my point, and most of the images are from Nylon magazine. It's a commentary on the mean girl (hopefully, that's obvious). That girl means business.

a doodle-e-doo inspired by the mannequins in my apparel II classroom.

I didn't intend to have an underlying morbid meaning in this drawing, but I think it's inevitable that it has one. Instead, I meant to symbolize my act of hanging up design for a while to focus on illustration. For those of you that don't know: I've officially changed my major to Illustration. Yet, I wouldn't dream of giving up fashion. I have a minor in fashion (I lack one class to complete it) and, as I always have, will be drawn to and in love with the sartorial. I still want to design--terribly so, but I've made the decision to cultivate my illustrator-side and to see where that takes me. My goal is to do fashion illustration of some sort, but illustration has so many avenues and I'm making myself open to where it takes me. I hope those that read my blog, continue to follow. I'll be posting the same things: inspiration, outfit posts, creations of mine, etc with hopes to showcase more of my illustration work.

Yeah. It's been a while. But guess what? I'm still here!

It is finals. The first quarter of my junior year of college is nearly over! I can't believe it!

I have to say, in just 10 weeks, I've come quite far. I've learned a lot of great things about modern artwork, illustrating techniques, pattern design, and so much more. There's been a few changes (details later on, loves), but I'm super excited for a break and a new year.

So, I leave you with love and a new illustration (I'll let you do the interpreting.) ;)

Truly Forward Fashion

I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but, I have decided to set my career goals in the realm of eco-fashion. I might not exactly be the poster child for a green life. Yet, the idea that something I plan to do for a living effects so many people and has such long-lasting effects makes me eager to be involved in environmentally conscious fashion (I've found that the fashion industry can be fast-paced, cut throat, and resultingly, quite wasteful).

I want to work for (and eventually create) a business that's rooted in fair trade practices and creates garments that are sustainable.

I initially had different plans for this post. I was going to cover my favorites from London Fashion Week. Instead, I chose to share with you the amazingly talented green designers that are moving fashion forward with fresh ideas sartorially and economically. Many designers had a chance to show their Spring 2010 collections at the GreenShows during New York Fashion Week! Below are a few of the inspiring looks that could have easily been shown in Bryant Park.

These ladies are proof that a trip to the store is no less stylish an occasion than any other! How fun is their cohesive color scheme of black and white and each of the quirky and fun additions? Check out the necklace on the chicette on the left, the shoes on the girl in the center, and the stripe-on-stripe that's going on at the end!

A great accessory doesn't have to be limited to a great bag or shoe. Super stylish friends are better than a go-to pair of black pumps or the latest it bag!

On a similar note: Last night, some of my pals and I unintentionally dressed in black and blue! The absurd facial expressions were somewhat intentional!

I was in and out of meetings and work today. One meeting was held to introduce all fashion students at SCAD to the new dean of what is now the School of Fashion (no longer a mere department of the school of design). Dean Fink spoke about the things we should be doing as fashion students and how the program is there to help. One thing he touched on was dress code. (few students in the department know that we actually have a written code!). No tshirt, jean, flip-flop ensembles--dress like you're a fashion student! Experiment! And, yes, we all have our bad days, but put forth the effort people!

NY fashion week ended today and, as I try to be a good fashion student, I reviewed as many shows as possible. Below I compiled a few of my favorites (sans the consideration of today's shows).

I really love all the use of sheers with a lot of collections. The Marchesa dresses are breathtaking, I continually adore the romantic looks from Vera, I want to be the girl that Peter Som designed that collection for, loved the lace and ruffles and downright fun at Betsey, and Doo.Ri and Alex Wang...genius!! I only wish I could design/wear anything like it!

Paolo Nutini - New Music - More Music Videos

My new booties from payless arrived today. I felt this song very appropriate.

I have to say that I've never owned an "edgier" shoe before. Look in my closet and nearly half of my shoes have bows on them! It was time for a change! I was partially inspired to purchase them for the collection I'm currently working on. It's symbolic of my current transition in style. I'm calling it "The Elegant Rebel." Think Karl meets Coco, rough meets delicate, biker chick meets vintage Victorian.

I'm using myself as a model and hoping to actually have 3-4 looks completed before I head back to Sav. I'm hoping I make this goal. Really, really need some new portfolio pieces!

I'm a fan of Payless shoes. For two reasons a) they're cheap b) they create shoes that actually fit my feet that I actually like to wear.

And, I love when they have designer lines like Abaete or Alice + Olivia.

I was inspired by the latest issue of Nylon to design and illustrate a pair of jeans I'd personally love to rock. Someday...

skinny leg, mid rise, turquoise/black wash, inside zipper calf seam, zipper details on pockets and center back seam, studded hem, and extra belt loops. Every aspect solves most of the tiffs I have with current jeans I own.

As a designer, I not only think about the clothes I want to make and sell, but the women I imagine wearing them. From a celebrity angle, I would love to dress Jordin Sparks. She shows confidence and embraces her curvaceous figure. It's women like Sparks, that aren't model thin or plus size, that need more attention from the fashion world. As a "stuck-in-the-middle" girl myself, I know the troubles of finding clothes or looking at a model in a magazine and trying to warp the size "-0" she's wearing into something that might possibly work for me. There's so many women out there with unique body types and fashion needs. It's refreshing to see more and more women like Jordin Sparks not pressured by fame to be another stick thin pop singer (and more campaigns that are doing the same: Dove). Not to mention, I'm sure we'd be a perfect model-muse & designer pair with her love for asymmetry, zippers, form-fitting and flowy dresses!

Chocolate Goodies

Today I finished a skirt that I've been meaning to finish for quite awhile. Initially, it was just the brown fabric. Then, I found the silver belt-like yardage at a yard sale. I thought to myself: "If a top with an embellished neckline allows a women not to worry about accessorizing, then I want a skirt that does the same, with my personal favorite accessory--the high-waisted belt." So, here it is. I call it the "Chocolate Kiss" skirt--for obvious reasons. Hope, you find it scrumptious too! Finally received a book I preordered a few months ago. 100 Girls on Cheap Paper is a collection of works by one of my favorite illustrators, Tina Berning. I discovered her a few months ago after needing to use an illustrator's style for a fashion sketching assignment (The croquis in my header was done in Berning style). The minimal technique she uses relays so exquisitely, even on "cheap paper." Below are a couple of great pieces from the book.
Tomorrow, I have a small fabric run to do for my internship and then I'm off to Savannah for a weekend with my girls! I hope to have some street style and personal style pictures to share upon my return!

Allo! It's been a few days, yes, since my last post, but I promise with various good reasons...

I did a little t-shirt DIY today and yesterday. I'm still in the process of tye-dying my black skinnies... I'm being a little meticulous about the design and I've ran into a few supply problems (Mom actually had to use the bleach to do the whites).

I have photos from a little party I attended last Saturday. I made a dress for it (a big reason for my hiatus from the blogosphere) Photos up (hopefully) 'morrows!

I love the feeling of exposing just the right amount of skin. It wasn't until I read this article from Refinery29.com that I found myself DIYing a trend. I personally adored this jersey dress from Sophomore.

Anywho, I'm working on a muslin prototype of my summer maxi and my tie dye skinnies at the current moment. I have hope that they will be completed. My story needs a new ending...well, it just needs an ending for heaven's sake! =/

I swear this isn't the same exact outfit from my fourth of July post. Girl Scouts honor...it is quite close though. I went a little more hippie/bohemian with this top and my peace earrings. Fascinating...I know. I felt like soaking up the sun a bit on my day off before heading to work with the designer I've been interning with. The past week has been a work/eat/sleep/sew/sketch kinda week. Nothing particularly thrilling. I've got some illustration work, DIY projects, and other sartorial things to share soon!

She'll be comin' round the mountain

Yesterday, my mum and I took a lovely day trip into Asheville. If you're every in NC, I must recommend venturing into the mountains to visit the city! It has so many great, random places. The town is very artistic. So many great little shops, restaurants, and museums!

We started the day off at an organic Southern cuisine restaurant called Early Girl Eatery. Delicious.

My leftovers rode home in a cute little recycled cardboard box.

We stopped at True Confections for a sweet end to our lunch. Mango sorbet and caramel cheesecake. Um, yes, please!
Lexington Ave. is the place to go! So many unique clothing,art, vintage, book, and music shops. We found a fun photo opp at this old fashioned iron sculpture.

We ended the day by seeing Away We Go at The Carolina theatre. A great experience and an excellent movie. Highly recommend viewing it! I didn't make out with any sartorial finds, but I didn't come home empty handed. Art supplies and a Metro Pop magazine along with a few birthday gifts for some friends were my catches of the day.

Finally! Rain!...that I sort of missed out on. =( I was working for most of the day, so I didn't get a chance to break out the umbrella. I just stood inside the rather cozy coffee shop and watched the water fall. After work, I scurried on over to a used book store nearby. Books and rain just make sense. I picked up a copy of "Falling Up" by Shel Silverstein and a great 70''s Vogue Sewing book. Witty poems, fun illustrations, and a great sewing book were the perfect end to my day.

I've got to try this sometime. Clothed, of course! =)

As promised, a second summer playlist! This time 'round, I thought I'd give a short bit on how each song found its way on to the list. Like myself, the collection is quite random, but I like to have songs for different moods and things and places. I'd love to hear your feedback! =)

"Daylight" by Matt and Kim /The entire album,"Grand" is basically AMAZING. The tracks are so catchy. Keyboard, drums, and lyrics. So simple and so great. I can't stop listening to it!

"Don't Slow Down" by Matt and Kim/right now, I sing this to myself when I get a rush of customers @ work. Coming this fall, this will be my all-nighter theme song!

"Warm Whispers" by Missy Higgins/ This girl's voice is so soothing. She sounds like her lyrics "honey and milk." It reminds me of feeling the sun warm on your face on a perfect summer afternoon. I like to mellow out and sing along to this one.

"Machine" by Regina Spektor /My girl finally came out with another album! Spektor is an acquired taste, you either hate her or love her. Completely unique. The instrumentals and tempo sound just like a machine.

"Cheerleader" by Grizzly Bear/ I really enjoy the sound of the vocals in this song. This is another one great for unwinding.

"Trouble" by Coldplay/I absolutely love the instrumentals in this song!! It has a less than cheery-sunshine-sound, but, hey, sometimes it rains. I overplayed Viva La Vida last summer, so in redemption, I'm listening to some older stuff.

"July! July!" by The Decemberists/Because its July and it's the Decemberists. Simple enough.

"Turn My Swag On" by Souljaboytellem/ This gets me off to work right =). It's great for getting ready.

"The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid" by the Decemberists/ Totally makes me want to put on a Victorian dress, play the harpsichord, then go to a haunted house. Very odd series of events there.

"A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left" by Andrew Bird/ The song that got me hooked. Recently found out I'll be seeing him in Asheville in October!!! I'll listen everyday in preparation!

I've been m.i.a for a few days due to work and other projects. You'll notice the new, badly done header. It's a temp. I'm working on illustrating something new, and I'm trying out new sizes. Hopefully, it won't hurt your eyes too bad! If there are any ideas for a groovy, eye-catching header design, please, shoot them my way!

Just a little update on my summer maxi dress. I've started by searching for the right fabrics. I just received samples for the under dress in the mail today. I have a few decisions to make but I'm leaning toward the softest, lightest fabric--all organic cotton of course! Next, to find the perfect cotton lace overlay.
I'll be posting a few sneak peeks of some sketches for the dress soon!

I mentioned getting a tattoo in a past post. The more and more I thought about it, I knew I really wanted one. I let the ideas simmer, tried to think of something that has meaningful and in the end 86ed the typical "thing with wings" (thanks roomies). I've decided to go with a seam ripper because it a) symbolizes sewing/fashion b) symbolizes the act of starting over and trying again and c) not many people get seam rippers as tattoos. So, I need a little help with the final design. Which one (or neither)

At the end of the quarter, I had to start a new sketchbook with only one collection left to do. Now, with a practically empty sketchbook, I plan to keep filling it with collections. Hopefully by summer's end. To kick it off, I've made some inspiration boards. Random ideas float in my head and I think "Oh! Maybe that could be my next inspiration for a collection!"

I must recommend a really awesome sight: ffffound.com (that's 4 F's). It's like being lead down a trail by a friend pulling your hand and you having no idea where you're going--but it's all good! (That could be the most horrible comparision ever, but hopefully you get the picture) One picture leads to the next and so on. This with a little bit o photoshop is perfect for beating "board"om and boredom (haha--cheesy, I know!)

Overdue fines: I've been a bad blogger

Please forgive my forgotten promises of posts past. I promised a post of my thrifted Dior jacket back in April! I also mentioned an online store I really wanted to share. So, no lies, I'm doing both right now!

Below are photos of my Dior jacket. I fell for the military influences and the "I-got-lucky" fit. Forgive the silly pose at the bottom. This was a photoshoot and my roomies and I were trying to be creative.

The Sunday Brunch Dress shop is a fresh new spin on shopping. It's specifically dresses and even more precisely, adorable, one-of-a-kind dresses. I think the owner captured just what she's selling with this snip-it from the about page:

The site is so cute and easy to navigate, and the descriptions are witty and informative They go the extra mile to inform you have what you're getting from color to fit. They use "Chuck" (the imaginary shopper) as a gauge of how the dresses fit. And I almost forgot to mention that shipping is FREE! You must visit!

Every year, I try to keep track of the songs that I felt defined my summer. The songs that were playing on a trip or the tracks that kept me pushing repeat. Music, I've found is a motivator and comforter. It can encourage me to have fun, work harder, or simply let me know I'm not alone in what I'm feeling. Summer Project 1

While shopping with some of my roommates, I found a really cute dress. One of those dresses that one thinks, "this is so me! it's too adorable to pass up. I must have it!" Then, the fitting room happened. The cut just wasn't for me. So, I decided to snap a photo and use the dress as inspiration for a maxi dress I will (oh yes, I WILL!) complete by summer's end. Hopefully, it'll be finished before then so I can actually wear it, but I want to give myself plenty of time so that it doesn't end up in the "I'll finish that later when I have mad sewing skills" pile. I want to

a) lengthen it to a maxi length

b) find similar fabric: cotton under dress with lace overlay and

c) maybe even do an ombre dye.

Evolution

Summer has arrived. A much needed break from the incessant work load at school. The way I'll be passing the time for the next three months will include making coffee and smoothies (meaning: being a barista @ my local coffeeshop), sketching my heart out (meaning: designing and drawing exactly what I want for a change), sporatic trips to see friends (meaning: well, just that), and the usual daydreaming in between.
Since I'm back home with little opportunity to photograph street style, I'll be gearing my posts to musings and weekly posts of collections and sketches. I have a list of goals and "an accountability partner" to see that I stay on track. The hot days are known to make me fall short of my intentions sometimes.
To start off, I wanted to do an analysis of past work and present. I feel that I've grown tremendously over this past year as an artist and designer. To show you what I mean, below are 3 sketches from 2006 (my sohomore or junior year of high school) and 3 sketches from this past quarter.

Here's to continued growth and to my fellow artists/designers. To keep me going this summer, my theme song is "Creator" by Santogold. It gets me pumped and reminds me of what I am or hope to be.

At the end of a long (and I mean 24 hour plus long) day I like to have some phrase floating about in my head as a bit of encouragement to keep moving on. Recently, my obsession with Harold and Maude has resurfaced, and the little mantra on my mind is a few of the great lines that Maude says throughout the movie (as well as those good ol' Cat Stevens songs).

So, without care to the world's judgment I want to share a few things on my mind and a glimpse into my Harold and Maude menswear collection from my Advanced Fashion Sketching class. Enjoy!

I want to have a portrait of myself done with an illustrated background and paper dresses. This photo from Another Magazine Issue 16 is close to what have pondered it might look like.

I'm dying for a pair of cute brogues. Inspired by menswear but slim and wide opening like this. Metallic or purple ones would be a plus!

Street Style pictures from a fancy little soiree put on by some of the Professional Writing majors at SCAD (my roommates a Professional Writing major hence my attendance).

The weekend had been pretty fab thus far. I got to spend 5 hours Friday watching senior fashion majors get their 6 look final collection critiqued. There's was some pretty amazing stuff that I wish I could share. Fingers crossed I'll get to see the final looks chosen at the fashion show May 16th. Updates until then!

Okay, I'm writing a post to prove that I'm alive and have made it through not only 6 weeks of this quarter but nearly 2, count that, 2 years of college...alive!

I wanted to share a cool line of organic t-shirts (hence the title of this post). I was talking with my roomies about wanting a cool, comfy organic tee and I got an email from Generation Love within a few days! I love how you get an edgy, sexy feel from a laidback and eco-friendly staple. Here are a few of my favs: Stud Epaulets are divine!

Sidewalk Arts Festival 09

Today I went to the SCAD Sidewalk Arts Festival. Squares were filled with a wide range of artwork done by current students, prospective students, and alumni. My roommates, a friend, and I had two squares. No pictures yet, but I'll be posting them soon!

Below, I snapped a few photos of my favorite squares and outfits. Her friend made her hat and had the square beside ours. She made huge, delicious looking cupcake!

There were some fabulous, messy looks! My gang and I had fun coloring ourselves with the chalk!

My current collection is ethnic inspired, so this fun colorful print caught my eye.

Badgley Mischka and 20s street style

For SCADstyle week, we had the honor of having designers Marc Badgley and James Mischka hold a Q&A tonight. The discussion, questions, and advice were great. They spoke about their label's style, tips on how to make it in the fast-paced fashion business, how they started out, and there was a lot of talk about the current economic situation. According to them, the $10,000 dresses they make and couture industry will survive! Apparently, it can never die.

Oddly related, the girl that sat in front of me caught my attention for a street style post. Turbans have been on my mind since I designed a retro swimwear collection that included a few of the cute wrap caps. Her turban is actually a 20s cap that she so cleverly wore backwards. Paired with the striped top, tassel necklace, and wide leg pant I read the perfect 20s vibe. So, some people can still afford a $10,000 gown as opposed to, say, the normal three in today's fickle economy. I say, stylish folks like this girl have the answer if its daily wear and a smaller budget were talking about. Vintage is always the answer! At least for me!

I'm still swamped with work, but I can't control my urge to post! Until next time loves!

Beauty from pain

This is a quickie post to tell you that I will be on a temporary hiatus for the next month or so due to the overwhelming demand of...coursework. Yes, yes, tears, but no worries I shall return and better than ever! No pain, no gain! I do have a few things on "stock" to share. When I get a chance to breath or decide to procrastinate (we all do it, people!) I'll do a post on the quick.
Below I found a photo in I.D. magazine. It's about this fashion designer/stylist's tattoo. Coincidentally, I've planned to get some "ink" with a similar concept after graduation, as sort of a mark of my accomplishments. And trust me, the pain of the tattoo will be nothing compared to the "pain" of 4 years of art school. I know I can get an "Amen!" on that from some of you!

a close up... I really like her meaning behind the tattoo: "the heart stitched with a needle is inspired by eco-feminist thinking, it symbolizes the value I place in feminine traditions." I can relate, but I guess my reasoning is a little more superficial. I just wanted my tattoo to symbolize fashion. I have two more years to think of a better reason.
